Lookbook: Topman Lux A/W 2016
With a dedicated film and editorial featuring Korean-born British model Sang Woo Kim, Topman has finally unveiled their finest capsule collection of the season. Topman Lux is for me their most interesting release.
Fusing modern tailoring with a hint of attitude and a lot of technical prowess, the twelve-piece collection is ambitious when it comes to proportions, cropped for the jackets and trousers, elongated for the outerwear.
The ghost of a blue collar demeanour can be felt behind each and every garment, following in this French utilitarian way that brands like A.P.C. or AMI have so smartly mastered for the upper echelons of the High Street customer.
Topman Lux is able to combine this mindset of functional tailoring with a street edge and lower price, without renouncing to the quality of higher-spec fabrics.
Traditional elements are avoided, lapels vanish, zippers substitute buttons, all in a collection where lines are fluid and relaxed, both in the hybrid shirt-jackets and the smart jogger-style trousers.
The video, second instalment of Topman's Private Views presents Sang Woo Kim in his London studio, talking about his art and views on style and comfort.
Because, this collection is a great example of when those ingredients are in the right order, the result is that London state of mind recipe that Topman is so good at synthesising.
